भीष्म उवाच जामदग्न्येन रामेण पितुर्वधममृष्यता क्रुद्धेन च महाभागे हैहयाधिपतिर्हतः शतानि दश बाहूनां निकृत्तान्यर्जुनस्य वै
Bhīṣma said, : "Jāmadagni's son Rāma was angry when his father was killed and in his anger, the immensely illustrious one killed the king of the Haihaya-s. He sliced off Arjuna's 1000 arms.
भीष्म ने कहा, "जमदग्नि के पुत्र राम अपने पिता के मारे जाने पर क्रोधित थे और उनके क्रोध में, अत्यंत प्रतापी ने हैहय राजा की हत्या कर दी। उन्होंने अर्जुन की 1000 भुजाएँ काट दीं।
Then he again took up his bow to conquer the world. Using his wonderful weapons,

एवमुच्चावचैरस्त्रैर्भार्गवेण महात्मना त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी कृता निःक्षत्रिया पुरा
the great-souled descendant of Bhārgava used his arrows to exterminate Kṣatriya-s from the world twenty-one times.
भार्गव के महान आत्मा वाले वंशज ने क्षत्रियों को इक्कीस बार दुनिया से खत्म करने के लिए अपने तीरों का इस्तेमाल किया।
Then Kṣatriya women everywhere had offspring through Brāhmana-s who were self-controlled.
तब हर जगह क्षत्रिय महिलाओं की संतानें ब्राह्मणों के माध्यम से हुईं जो आत्म-नियंत्रित थीं।
The Veda-s clearly say that a son so born belongs to the one who accepted the hand. With dharma in their minds, they united with the Brāhmana-s. The world has thus seen the resurgence of the Kṣatriya-s.
वेद स्पष्ट रूप से कहते हैं कि जन्मा हुआ पुत्र उसी का होता है जिसने हाथ स्वीकार किया हो। अपने मन में धर्म के साथ, वे ब्राह्मणों के साथ एकजुट हुए। इस प्रकार दुनिया ने क्षत्रियों का पुनरुत्थान देखा है।

अथोतथ्य इति ख्यात आसीद्धीमानृषिः पुरा ममता नाम तस्यासीद्भार्या परमसंमता
In earlier times, there was a famous and wise riṣi named Utathya. His wife was named Mamatā and he loved her dearly.
पूर्वकाल में उतथ्य नाम के एक प्रसिद्ध एवं बुद्धिमान ऋषि थे। उनकी पत्नी का नाम ममता था और वह उनसे बहुत प्यार करते थे।
Utathya's younger brother was the immensely energetic Bṛhaspati, the priest of the gods. He desired Mamatā and sought to unite with her.
उतथ्य के छोटे भाई अत्यंत ऊर्जावान बृहस्पति, देवताओं के पुजारी थे। वह ममता को चाहते थे और उनके साथ एकजुट होना चाहते थे।
Mamatā told her brother-in-law, who was most eloquent in speech, "I am pregnant through your older brother. Therefore, desist.
ममता ने अपने जीजाजी से, जो बोलने में सबसे कुशल थे, कहा, "मैं तुम्हारे बड़े भाई से गर्भवती हूं। इसलिए रुको।"

अयं च मे महाभाग कुक्षावेव बृहस्पते औतथ्यो वेदमत्रैव षडङ्गं प्रत्यधीयत
O illustrious Bṛhaspati! Utathya's son is in my womb and has studied the Veda-s and the Vedāṅga-s there.
हे महाबली बृहस्पति! उतथ्य का पुत्र मेरे गर्भ में है और उसने वहां वेद और वेदांगों का अध्ययन किया है।
At these words, the immensely energetic Bṛhaspati could not suppress his desire, though he had achieved self-control.
इन शब्दों पर, अत्यधिक ऊर्जावान बृहस्पति अपनी इच्छा को दबा नहीं सके, हालाँकि उन्होंने आत्म-नियंत्रण हासिल कर लिया था।

संबभूव ततः कामी तया सार्धमकामया उत्सृजन्तं तु तं रेतः स गर्भस्थोऽभ्यभाषत
The desiring one united with her, though she did not desire him in return. When he spilt his semen, the embryo inside the womb said,
चाहने वाला उसके साथ एक हो गया, हालाँकि उसने बदले में उसे नहीं चाहा। जब उसने अपना वीर्य गिराया तो गर्भ में पल रहे भ्रूण ने कहा,
"O father! There is no room inside for two of us. I was here first and you have unnecessarily wasted your semen."
"हे पिताजी! अंदर हम दोनों के लिए जगह नहीं है। मैं यहां पहले आया था और आपने व्यर्थ ही अपना वीर्य बर्बाद कर दिया।"
At this, the illustrious riṣi Bṛhaspati was angry and cursed Utathya's son, who was in the womb.
इस पर, महान ऋषि बृहस्पति क्रोधित हो गए और उन्होंने उतथ्य के पुत्र, जो गर्भ में था, को श्राप दे दिया।
"You have spoken at a time that all beings crave for. Therefore, you will enter a long period of darkness."
"आपने ऐसे समय में बात की है जिसके लिए सभी प्राणी तरसते हैं। इसलिए, आप अंधकार की एक लंबी अवधि में प्रवेश करेंगे।"

स वै दीर्घतमा नाम शापादृषिरजायत बृहस्पतेर्बृहत्कीर्तेर्बृहस्पतिरिवौजसा
From this curse was born the riṣi Dīrghatama. He was Bṛhaspati's equal in great deeds and great energy.
इस श्राप से ऋषि दीर्घतमा का जन्म हुआ। वह महान कार्यों और महान ऊर्जा में बृहस्पति के समकक्ष थे।

स पुत्राञ्जनयामास गौतमादीन्महायशाः ऋषेरुतथ्यस्य तदा संतानकुलवृद्धये
To extend Utathya's lineage, the famous riṣi had sons like Gautama and others, all immensely famous.
उतथ्य के वंश को बढ़ाने के लिए, प्रसिद्ध ऋषि के गौतम और अन्य जैसे पुत्र थे, जो सभी बेहद प्रसिद्ध थे।
But Gautama and the other sons were overcome by greed and delusion. They tied him to wood and threw him into the waters of the Gāṅga.
लेकिन गौतम और अन्य पुत्र लालच और भ्रम से ग्रस्त थे। उन्होंने उसे लकड़ी से बाँध दिया और गंगा के पानी में फेंक दिया।

न स्यादन्धश्च वृद्धश्च भर्तव्योऽयमिति स्म ते चिन्तयित्वा ततः क्रूराः प्रतिजग्मुरथो गृहान्
"This man is blind and old. Why should we support him?" Thinking in this way, the cruel ones returned home.
"यह आदमी अंधा और बूढ़ा है। हमें उसका समर्थन क्यों करना चाहिए?" इस प्रकार विचार करते हुए क्रूर लोग घर लौट आये।
O king! The riṣi then floated along the river, blindly passing many kingdoms on the raft.
हे राजा! फिर ऋषि नदी के किनारे तैरते रहे, और नाव पर कई राज्यों को आँख मूँद कर पार करते रहे।

तं तु राजा बलिर्नाम सर्वधर्मविशारदः अपश्यन्मज्जनगतः स्रोतसाभ्याशमागतम्
One day, a king named Bali, who was learned in all aspects of dharma, had come to the water and saw him floating along in the current.
एक दिन, बाली नाम का एक राजा, जो धर्म के सभी पहलुओं में विद्वान था, पानी के पास आया और उसने उसे धारा में बहते हुए देखा।
O bull among men! The righteous Bali found his strength in truth. He knew who he was and grasped him, so that he could obtain sons.
हे मनुष्यों में बैल! धर्मात्मा बाली को सत्य में ही अपनी शक्ति का पता चला। वह जानता था कि वह कौन है और उसने उसे पकड़ लिया, ताकि वह पुत्र प्राप्त कर सके।
He said, "O illustrious one! Honour me. I have to obtain sons through my wife. Therefore, father sons who are knowledgeable in dharma and artha."
उन्होंने कहा, "हे महान! मेरा सम्मान करो। मुझे अपनी पत्नी के माध्यम से पुत्र प्राप्त करना है। इसलिए, पिता ऐसे पुत्र हैं जो धर्म और अर्थ के जानकार हों।"

एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी तं तथेत्युक्तवानृषिः तस्मै स राजा स्वां भार्यां सुदेष्णां प्राहिणोत्तदा
Thus addressed, the energetic riṣi agreed. The king then sent his wife Sudeṣṇā to him.
इस प्रकार संबोधित करने पर, ऊर्जावान ऋषि सहमत हुए। तब राजा ने अपनी पत्नी सुदेष्णा को उसके पास भेजा।

अन्धं वृद्धं च तं मत्वा न सा देवी जगाम ह स्वां तु धात्रेयिकां तस्मै वृद्धाय प्राहिणोत्तदा
But knowing that he was old and blind, the queen did not go to him. Instead, she demeaned him and sent her ignorant Śūdra nurse.
लेकिन यह जानकर कि वह बूढ़ा और अंधा है, रानी उसके पास नहीं गयी। इसके बजाय, उसने उसे अपमानित किया और अपनी अज्ञानी शूद्र नर्स को भेज दिया।
The righteous riṣi then fathered eleven sons on the Śūdra woman, the first of whom was named Kākṣīvat.
तब धर्मात्मा ऋषि ने शूद्र स्त्री से ग्यारह पुत्रों को जन्म दिया, जिनमें से पहले का नाम काक्षीवत था।
When he saw Kākṣīvat and all the other sons studying, the valorous king was delighted and told the riṣi,

"These are mine." "No," said the maharṣi and continued, "I have fathered Kākṣīvat and the others on a Śūdra woman.

अन्धं वृद्धं च मां मत्वा सुदेष्णा महिषी तव अवमन्य ददौ मूढा शूद्रां धात्रेयिकां हि मे
Your queen Sudeṣṇā discovered that I was blind and old. In her folly, she insulted me and sent her Śūdra nurse to me."
आपकी रानी सुदेष्णा को पता चला कि मैं अंधा और बूढ़ा हूँ। अपनी मूर्खता में उसने मेरा अपमान किया और अपनी शूद्र नर्स को मेरे पास भेजा।"
Bali then pacified that supreme of riṣi-s and again sent his wife Sudeṣṇā to him.
तब बलि ने उन श्रेष्ठ ऋषियों को शांत किया और अपनी पत्नी सुदेष्णा को फिर से उनके पास भेजा।
Dīrghatama felt the queen's limbs and told her, "You will have a powerful son who will be devoted to the truth."
दीर्घतमा ने रानी के अंगों को महसूस किया और उससे कहा, "तुम्हारे पास एक शक्तिशाली पुत्र होगा जो सत्य के प्रति समर्पित होगा।"
Thus the rājarṣi Aṅga was born from Sudeṣṇā. In this way, many Kṣatriya-s who were great archers were born from Brāhmana-s.
इस प्रकार सुदेष्णा से राजर्षि अंग का जन्म हुआ। इस प्रकार, ब्राह्मणों से कई क्षत्रिय पैदा हुए जो महान धनुर्धर थे।
They were supremely learned in dharma, valorous and had great strength. O mother! Having heard this, you should do as you desire."
वे धर्म के परम विद्वान, शूरवीर और महान बलशाली थे। हे माँ! यह सुनकर तुम्हें जो इच्छा हो वही करना चाहिए।"
